This beautiful fibre is similar to Ramie, but is grown in the wild in areas of Nepal. The plant grows in areas of altitude of 1,800-3000m.
It grows up to 3m in one year, and does so with no pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers.
Every time the plant is harvested it sends out a stronger root system, stabilising the top soil, reducing land slides and soil runoff.
The plant will only grow when there is a tall tree canopy above it, so harvesting this plant reduces deforestation.
Local people do all the harvesting and scrutching, providing employment in one of the poorest parts of the world. The fibre is then sent to Italy for further degumming and combing.
