Prussian Blue - Pigments- Merino, Sari Silk, Mulberry Silk & Llama. 100g

Soft, shiny, with lots of beautiful texture from the Sari Silk. 

Many discoveries are made purely by accident, and this is the case with Prussian Blue. A paint manufacturer called Johann Jacob Diesbach was trying to make a cochineal red lake. This process uses iron sulphate and potash, but instead of his usual supplier Diesbach used some potash from a different source. When he added the potash to his mixture the colour failed to turn red, instead it because pale pink, he stirred some more and it slowly became purple, and eventually a deep blue. The potash had been adulterated with animal oil, and the reaction had formed potassium ferrocyanide, which when combined with the iron made iron ferrocyanide, the colour we now call Prussian Blue. The art world was crying out for a good blue pigment, and crucially this new paint reacting well with lead white and yellow pigments like Orpiment. Despite the cyanide in the name the paint is non-toxic, but unfortunately fades in strong light. Hogarth, Constable, Van Gogh and Monet were all fans, and it's the colour used almost exclusively by Picasso in his Blue Period. It was even used to develop a photosensitive paper to make an early form pf photocopying, from which we get the term blueprint.

Colour Description- Dark Blue with purple and emerald green streaks with hot pink texture.

This range of fibres will use the same fibre composition, and the collection will rotate through different colours and collections over time. Some colours will be restocked, and others may be temporary to allow space for other colours. Even if a colour is restocked the nature of the sari silk means it's unlikely that the next batch will be the same "dye lot". If consistency is going to be vital for your project please bear this in mind.

All these fibres, with the exception of the recycled sari silk have been professionally dyed to Okeo-Tex 100 certification. Sari silk can sometimes be prone to colour bleeding, caution is advised on the first wash.
